My Stay Abroad in MilanAn Experience Like No Other

“Milan is a city that doesn’t call out loudly but quietly impresses—with elegance, history, and a rhythm that has a magic all its own.”

May 27, 2026, Nicolai Huber - Industrial engineering dual study program

On January 24, 2026, I set off for Milan by plane. For nine weeks, I had the opportunity to work with our Italian colleagues in the fashion capital.

On the first day of my journey, I headed to Italy filled with anticipation and a bit of nervousness. The thought of spending several weeks alone in a foreign country where I don’t speak the language initially gave me a slight sense of unease. At the same time, however, the excitement of meeting new people, experiencing a new culture, and growing both professionally and personally was even greater.

After arriving in Milan, I settled into my accommodation in the quiet suburb of Seguro in Settimo Milanese. This area became my home for the next few weeks—slightly outside the city, but well connected, allowing me to easily reach both the city center and the office.

On my first day at work, I stood in front of our Italian Rutronik building. I received a warm welcome, and the open, friendly nature of my new colleagues helped me quickly settle in. Even though I don’t speak any Italian and had to rely entirely on English, communication worked surprisingly well. My colleagues were considerate, patient, and supported me with everything I needed.

For most people, the workday starts at 9 a.m., which was another adjustment for me as a German. In the mornings, I was often invited to have coffee together. Italian espresso is definitely one of the things I will miss back home.

In addition to work, I used every free minute to explore the city of Milan. One of my first highlights was the Milan Cathedral, a breathtaking structure whose intricate details are even more impressive in real life than in photos. Another great experience was the Winter Olympics, which took place during my stay in Milan. I managed to get tickets for the women’s ice hockey games between the USA and Finland, and Germany and France. The atmosphere in the Milano Rho Arena, the emotions, and the sport made both evenings unforgettable.

One of my absolute favorite places is the Navigli district. The canals, the lively atmosphere, and the small cafés and restaurants create a unique charm that cannot be found in any other European city. Especially in the evenings, Navigli truly comes to life—a place you must see if you want to truly experience Milan.

The weeks here were intense, educational, and incredibly enriching. Even though it was challenging to manage without any Italian and rely on English, I learned a great deal about the country, its people, its work culture, and myself. My friendly Italian colleagues, with their openness, made this stay an unforgettable part of my dual studies.

Milan—with its vibrant blend of tradition, fashion, and Mediterranean lifestyle—will always remain a special memory for me.

Arrivederci Milano – we’ll meet again!
